Magnetic Poetry
Magnetic Poetry began with a sneeze and went out into the world with a bang—creator Dave Kapell was suffering from a bout of writer’s block and severe allergies. He sat down with words written on slips of paper, arranging them on the floor; however, every time he sneezed a blizzard of paper whirled around the room. Frustrated, Dave glued the papers to individual magnets and stuck them on a pizza tin, eventually moving them to his fridge. He noticed every time friends came over they would shift the words around, exploring different combinations and making the first magnetic poems. Thinking the rest of the world would enjoy the fun of word arranging, Dave made up 100 kits and took them to a mall at Calhoun square in Minneapolis. It only took three hours for all 100 kits to disappear, and they have been selling just as rapidly ever since.
